It’s on with the show as the 73rd annual Fort Bend County Fair finally arrives, culminating after months of work by more than 1,100 volunteers.

The work continues as the family friendly event unfolds over the next week-and-a-half, but all those who make it possible agree it’s a labor of love.

The fun begins with Sneak Peek Night Thursday, when admission to the fairgrounds is free and all-you-can-ride armbands are only $15 with a donation of two cans of food.

Students are admitted free again Friday, until 7 p.m., but most youngsters will want to watch the parade down U.S. 90A before heading out to the fairgrounds.

The procession starts at 9 a.m. near the courthouse in Richmond and continues down the highway to Jeannetta Street in Rosenberg, with some 150 entries decorated for the big event.

Parade marshal Emily Akin will be part of the starting line-up, as will Honoured Volunteers Louis and Joan Katz and 2009 Fair President Claudia Scott Wright.

Richmond and Rosenberg police will close the highway about 8 a.m. want the public to be aware of street closures in regard to the Fort Bend County Fair Parade.

Road closures begin about 8 a.m. from Second Street in Richmond to Damon Street in Rosenberg.

The theme of this year’s Fair is “Legacy of Yesterday, Promise of Tomorrow,” and plenty of activities are planned for the nine-day event.

The gates and midway open at 10 a.m. Friday, which is McDonald’s Day. The morning will be filled with livestock judging and the afternoon begins with Student Fun Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the O.D. Tucker Arena.

Grapes on the Brazos wine-tasting takes place from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Building W; popular KILT disc jockey Rowdy Yates will broadcast live from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and 359 Band performs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the Texas Stage.

The 2009 Fort Bend County Fair Queen will be crown in ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m. in Building D. Candidates are Ashley Renee Bartee, Lauren Braly, Aimee Casias, Mattie Haigh, Kaitlin Hoffman, Heather Hughes, Michelle Inman, London Mays, Jacqueline Romero and Anyssa Silva.

Goat judging starts at 6 p.m. in Barn H; the Fort Bend County Reunion Youth Rodeo kicks up dust at 7:30 p.m. in the O.D. Tucker Arena; and life members can take in the dance from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Fair Club, Building D.

The evening’s concerts are: Brandon Rhyder at 8 p.m. on the Brazos Stage; Tejas Brothers from 8 p.m. to midnight on the Texas Stage; and Stoney LaRue at 10 p.m. on the Brazos Stage.
